Appendix 6: An Example of Equivalency Work

The following is an example of term equivalency research, presented on the appropriate forms. This example is from equivalency work in prepraration for a multilingual thesaurus of religious objects-a collaborative project of the AAT, the ICCD in Italy, and the Canada/France Accord in Canada and France. For this project the source language was chosen from a publication of the CFA, Religious Objects, User's Guide and Terminology/Objets religieux, Methode d'analyse et vocabulaire[24]. This publication contains bilingual terminology lists for religious objects, fixtures, and vestments. The French terminology list formed the source language for the project.

The example term taken here is gradin d'autel, which has as BT autel et son environnement. This was noted on the multilingual term tracking sheet. The Canadian English equivalent for this term was altar shelf. The source term was researched and found in the ICCD publication Dizionari Terminologici, Suppellettile Ecclesiastica I[25]. The Italian equivalent was found to be gradino d'altare, which was noted in target descriptor box 2, with its source, status and page number. The source term was also checked against the French terminology list used by the Inventaire général in Paris, a fourth partner in this project. As their term matched the CFA term exactly, this was noted in target descriptor box 3. The concept of gradin d'autel was not yet available in the AAT. It was submitted as a Candidate Term and researched by the appropriate editor. Warrant, as shown on the bilingual term sheet, proved to be in favor of gradines as the American English descriptor, with the term altar shelves as a Use For. The resulting descriptor has been added to the AAT, and noted in target descriptor box 1.
