Appendix 4: The AAT Candidate Term Program

The AAT Candidate Term Program was established to expand and maintain the vocabulary of the Art & Architecture Thesaurus. Candidate terms and comments on existing terms are submitted to the AAT editors by users of the thesaurus on Candidate Term Forms and Comment Forms. When term research is completed, the submitter receives a Disposition Form with a report of the disposition of the candidate term or comment.

When submitting a candidate term for inclusion in the AAT, users are asked to support the candidate term with associated term information, such as the AAT descriptor that will represent the broader term to the candidate term, a suggested scope note, Use For terms and British-English equivalents, AAT descriptors that are related terms to the candidate term, as well as supporting documentation in the form of literary warrant and/or images. When submitting a Comment Form for an existing AAT term, users are requested to suggest what changes should be made, and support the suggested change with literary warrant.

The Vocabulary Program of the Getty Information Institute plans to make submission of candidate terms and suggested changes to the AAT (and to the Union List of Artist Names and Thesaurus of Geographic Names as well) available in an automated format-via the Internet or another online environment-in the near future.
