Celebrating Success

Tip of the Month

Keep an eye out for the next CHIN newsletter in September. Have a great summer!

CHIN and LAC Work Together

CHIN and Library and Archives Canada (LAC) are collaborating on the development of standards and a long-term preservation strategy for digital assets produced by museums, libraries and archives. While CHIN nurtures, aggregates and presents online heritage content by member museums and institutions, LAC works closely with other libraries and archives to acquire, preserve, and make accessible Canada's documentary heritage in all its forms.

With complimentary goals and a common sense of purpose, both organizations are examining ways of providing all Canadians with a more seamless access to our heritage. A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed shortly between the two organizations to reinforce a collaborative approach for museums, archives and libraries.

EXPO Colloquium Presentations Online

On June 6, 7 and 8, 60 heritage and new media practitioners and thought leaders from Canada and Asia gathered together in Aichi, Japan, at the EXPO 2005 Canadian Pavilion for a remarkable exchange of knowledge, best practices and ideas. CHIN and Canadian Culture Online planned the event on behalf of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

CHIN organized the second day's program, which consisted of a colloquium on the subject of Citizenship and Knowledge: Virtual Learning Communities in the Future. Attendees gained insight into the challenges and opportunities presented by audiences that increasingly seek participatory online spaces that allow for personalization and experiential learning. The PowerPoint presentations for that day, along with bios for all of the presenters, are now online. The PowerPoint presentations for the entire three days, along with photographs and video highlights, will be added in the coming weeks.

Innu Project Launch

CHIN and The Rooms (Provincial Museum Division) in collaboration with the Innu communities of Labrador and Quebec and partners from several museums and government organizations, present Tipatshimuna: Innu Stories from the Land – a Web space that expresses Innu culture and provides the means for the Innu communities to record, document, share, promote, and control access to their culture and traditional knowledge. Offering the perspectives of both Elders and youth, the Web space includes narratives about the Innu way of life before settlement, an exhibition gallery, and an online object database of Innu objects found in several Canadian museums.

The Rooms officially opened on June 29th. Newfoundland and Labrador's newest cultural space unites the Provincial Museum, the Provincial Art Gallery and the Provincial Archives.

Feedback Messages

New content analysis software is allowing CHIN to create a database and coding scheme that sorts and flags feedback messages from the VMC and the CHIN Web site. The software's ability to rapidly retrieve key quotes, text and demographic information is allowing us to gain a better sense of who are our visitors.

CHIN plans to eventually offer the software to member museums and institutions to help in addressing feedback and categorizing various types of messages, be it a request for more information about an exhibit, a suggestion, a note of thanks, words of praise or criticism, or an error report. For more information on the new feedback database, please contact Heather McCuaig (heather.mccuaig@chin.gc.ca).

Discussion Guide: Towards a New Museum Policy

The Department of Canadian Heritage is developing a new museum policy in order to assist museums in positioning themselves to meet the challenges they face and to mobilize the support they need from all stakeholders. A discussion guide is being made available to stimulate dialogue about the key issues that could be addressed in such a policy. Comments from interested parties are welcome by August 31, 2005. Your ideas and comments will be taken into consideration throughout the new museum policy development process. The Discussion Guide: Towards A New Museum Policy is available on the Department of Canadian Heritage Web site, www.canadianheritage.gc.ca, under What's New.

The Design Exchange, a public cultural attraction located in Toronto, applied and received funding for two Young Canada Works (YCW) national internships through CHIN. YCW offers students and young graduates the chance to put their skills to the test and start on the right career path with unique opportunities to learn and work in a museum, in one of Canada's National Parks, or even an internship in Canada or abroad.

The two interns worked with Design Exchange to assist in the coordination and launch of Digifest 2005 and worked on the coordination, production and launch of the digifest goes wild Web site and related programs.

Planning to go live or developing a virtual exhibit?

Best Practices in Museum Web Site Design is a bilingual Web site that explores the concept, design, and development of good educational Web sites from the perspective of the Canadian museum community. The site serves as a helpful guide for Web site conceptualization and planning, visual design, navigation, technology and resources to host, maintain, and promote your site.
